Advantages of Deep Breathing Exercises

Lung Master | Advantages of Deep Breathing Exercises
Everyone breathes but very few, however, know how to breathe correctly. Thoracic or chest breathing is found in a significant number of people including adults and children. It has been implicated in some respiratory and cardiovascular problems such as low oxygenated blood levels, rapid heartbeats, shortness of breath and rapid shallow breathing. Diaphragmatic or belly breathing is the correct form of breathing where an individual takes deep breaths that fill up his lungs and body with oxygen.
Deep breathing has shown to improve disposition, alleviate stress, improve confidence, and improve blood circulation. Deep breathing exercises assist the body in detoxification of unwanted toxins and gases that are contained in the body. Breathing properly is the body’s way to expel unwanted gases and toxins from respiratory surfaces, therefore, purifying its systems. Shallow breathes result in insufficient oxygen intake and reduced detoxification efficiency, causing an overload of other body excretory organs.
Deep breathing has shown to decrease stress and anxiety. It has a calming effect and can be a mood elevator in individuals. Shallow breathing has been implicated in stress and anxiety disorders since it occurs during challenging activities such as fight or flight situations. Deep breaths fill the body with oxygen, releases any tension, and optimizes the heartbeat bringing relief. It also stimulates both the parasympathetic nervous system and production of brain neurochemicals that initiate a calming and mood elevation effect.
During deep breathing, more oxygen is drawn into the lungs that supply other organs via the bloodstream. Improved oxygen intake increases maximum blood flow to the rest of the organs. It enhances metabolism, organ revitalization, digestion, appetite, and cardiovascular capacity. Diaphragmatic breathing has been shown to improve an individual’s posture because it requires a straight and upright position while breathing.
